If you have sustained damage to more than half of your tooth's biting surface, a porcelain inlay or onlay may be a solution for you. A porcelain inlay is used similarly to a filling and lies inside the cusp of the tooth. A porcelain onlay is used on the exterior of the tooth when more extensive reconstruction is necessary.
In the past, inlays and onlays were made of gold. They were very obvious when a person would smile or talk. In recent years, however, porcelain has become the material of choice because, in addition to adding strength and stability to the remaining tooth, it will match your teeth in color. Only your cosmetic dentist will know for sure.
When Dr. Bartolome and Dr. Swearingen initially meet with you and determine which tooth needs repair, the old filling or decay will be removed. Next, they will take an impression, or mold, of the tooth and it will be sent to the dental lab for a custom designed porcelain inlay/onlay. A temporary sealant will be used to fill the space until your inlay/onlay is ready. Once your custom inlay/onlay comes back to our doctors, they will use a strong dental bonding agent to affix the inlay/onlay to your tooth. The inlay/onlay is smoothed down and then you are ready to show off your new smile.
